Cop your Nike Windrunners today!
NIKE SPORTSWEAR UNVEILS
SPECIALLY CRAFTED WINDRUNNERS IN METALLIC COLOURS
Rooted in sports, this season’s Nike Windrunner collection takes on a new twist for consumers who are looking for self-expression and unlimited creativity.
Manila, Philippines. October 31, 2008 – Gold and Silver reign as the key colors featured in the Holiday 08 season of Nike Windrunners. One of 8 icons within Nike Sportswear collection, this iconic apparel is rooted in Nike’s passion for sport while re-mastered and further improved for this season. Playing up the ‘Bling’ factor for the collection, each metallic hue is paired up with 12 pop shades to create unique combinations that cater to style-savvy consumers that wish to express their individualism through their selection.
“This season’s Nike Windrunner metallic collection is all about anchoring the style in the heritage of sports and having fun with colors. By bringing in limited quantities will serve to elevate this iconic product within the Nike Sportswear range while catering to our discerning consumers who can appreciate quality craftsmanship to suit their taste,” said Nike Philippines Country Marketing Manager Mae Dichupa.
The Windrunner is Nike’s most recognizable piece of apparel. Designed as a running jacket, its nylon construction meant lightweight wear. But the Windrunner quickly transcended its athletic identity thanks to early hip-hop culture, which made it its own. Re-mastered for today, the lightweight shell is even lighter, built from super-breathable nylon and equipped with an updated hood that forgoes a hood adjuster for a clean finish.
Retailing each at P2,995, the collection will be made available for a limited time at Nike Park The Fort & Trinoma and Nike Stadium Greenbelt 5 from 31st October onwards. For more information, please visit: www.nikesportswear.com.
Windrunner: The ‘Cape Suit’ History
The iconic Windrunner with its signature 26° angle chest chevron and myriad color ways and versions. Popular culture, athletes of all stripes and online auction aficionados have all fallen under its powerful spell. Here then, is its potted history…
The Windrunner
The 26-degree chevron gives it away: you’ve seen it before. The ultimate running jacket, the Windrunner became the face of Nike apparel at a time when Nike was known for its footwear. The ’84 games offered the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how technologically advanced sporting equipment enhanced performance from head to toe; with 58 Nike supported athletes taking home 65 medals.
The Man Behind the Windrunner
A native of Eugene, Oregon, Geoff Hollister loved two things: art and the steeplechase. When it came time for college, it was only natural for him to attend the University of Oregon, just down the street, and to run for its legendary track coach Bill Bowerman. At Oregon, Geoff pursued a degree in fine arts while serving as a guinea pig for Bowerman’s footwear experiments.
In 1967, as a junior, Geoff began working with Oregon alum Philip Knight, who had recently started a business with Bowerman importing Japanese-made Onitsuka Tiger running shoes. Selling shoes allowed Geoff to earn extra cash for school and to buy himself a Studebaker Avanti, from which he would sell shoes when he drove to regional track meets on the weekends.
After graduating in 1968, Geoff served as a navigator in the navy during the Vietnam War, remaining in touch with Bowerman and Knight all the while. Upon his discharge, Geoff returned to work for them; by that time their company, then called Blue Ribbon Sports, was producing its own shoes. Geoff jumped right in, using his skills in art to create all manner of promotional materials for the fast-approaching Olympic trials in Eugene.
Apparel Designer and Athlete Liaison
Geoff took over Steve “Pre” Prefontaine’s unofficial role as Nike’s athlete relations representative after Pre’s untimely death in 1975. The title positioned him as both apparel designer and athlete liaison. While at times marketing and product development may seem at odds with each other, at Nike it wasn’t strange at all for Geoff to meet with an athlete, talk over his specific product needs, and hook him up with new training products. Geoff would then work this information back into the various prototypes Nike was developing.
In the spring of 1978, Geoff set out to create new training products for his Nike-sponsored runners. Hollister's primary goal was to create apparel to protect against the windy and soggy climate of the Pacific Northwest during winter training season. He recalled his study of the Pacific Coast Native Americans from one of his favorite classes, Native American History. He had been impressed by images of the woven cedar-bark capes that the Native Americans wore during the soggy Pacific Northwest winters to shield them from the rain and wind.
26°
Drawing inspiration from this evocative image, Geoff split the material of his new nylon jacket on the horizontal plane of the wearer’s shoulders; the two sides met in a distinctive 26-degree point on the chest. Hollister enhanced the division of the two fabrics with a bold colorblock that met in a distinctive chevron point on the chest. He equipped the upper with a microthin coating of water-repellent polyurethane, and the lower with vented insets to provide breathability as the athletes went through their warm-ups.
The ‘Cape Suit’
At some point after he drew the distinctive style line, Geoff probably noticed the striking superhero-like figure that the Windrunner cut on those who wore it. The look must have steeled the athletes’ confidence as they took to the field.
The 26° chevron with the different colors effectively created a “superhero” look for whoever wore it. The garment quickly gained favor with serious runners and in 1980 it assumed its place in history as the first piece of Nike apparel to be worn by athletes at the U.S. Track & Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
From Trackwear to Everyday Wear
Though Hollister would forever refer to his design as the ‘Cape Suit’, the “Windrunner” was officially named in the 1982 apparel catalogue. The Windrunner was later appropriated from the track to the street, earning infamy as a B-boy and street culture icon. Truly a case study of form following function and culture following athletics, the Windrunner design has endured for over 25 years.

NiKE Sportswear Launch Recap
When ballers, rockers, and oglers from all corners collide, you know it’s bound to be interesting. Toss in this allegedly gigantic company called Nike, hang back, and watch the awesomeness ensue. And whad’ya know? That exact thing came to pass on the night of August 21st, when a quiet corner of Gateway Mall, Cubao manned up into Nike’s very own special retail installation and gig space.
The star of the show was clearly the Nike Sportswear 2008 collection. Simply put, those are remastered versions of 8 of its most iconic designs: Air Max 90, Air Force One, AW 77, Dunk, Sportswear Tee, Cortez, Eugene Track Jacket and Windrunner.
“Nike takes pride in being a brand that’s deeply rooted in sports. By remastering the Nike Sportswear 2008 line, we’re focusing on blending our sports heritage with new design innovation for consumers,” said Mae Dichupa, Nike Philippines Country Marketing Manager. Teamed with videos of the brand’s line-up of transnational superathletes, the exhibit became more than sneaker eye candy. It was pure Nike porn.
To amuse the mob that came in the name of sneakerdom, Kjwan dedicated an unacoustic acoustic set to the Swoosh. They’re the first in a dizzying cast of Pinoy bands scheduled to dominate the area all month long.
So it all boils down to location, location, location. “What better way to launch this line than with an installation here in Cubao? We’re where Filipino sporting history continues to be made, from boxing to the UAAP Season 71,” adds Mae. Well, no surprise there since you can always count on Nike to be where the epicness is.
Rivermaya performs at the Nike special retail installation at the 4th Floor, Gateway Mall, Cubao on Aug. 28, 2008. For updates, log on to www.nikesporstwear.com

DJ Neil Armstrong Live in Manila Sat. Aug. 9 @ ALCHEMY
(click flyer to enlarge)
Acknowledged as the founding father of the DJ Collective .5th Platoon., Neil Armstrong is known as a purveyor of good music, dropping gourmet goods for mixtape aficionados, music connoisseurs and party people throughout the world.
Born and Breed in NYC, He cut his teeth in the early 90.s honing his skills in the realm of turntablism, the sect of DJing where proficiency in kutting, scratchin, and beatjuggling define status. His time spent in the trenches battling and mastering the art form allowed him to rock shows alongside artists across the Hip Hop Spectrum - from De La Soul, The Roots, Company Flow and Biz Markie, to Kanye West, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes and Wyclef Jean.
As a member of the critically acclaimed 2 time Grammy award nominated jazz band - "Russell Gunn and Ethnomusicology", he further explored the idea of using a turntable as an instrument. His stint with the band brought him around the globe to places like the North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Hague, Netherlands . one of the largest music gatherings in the world, and gave him the opportunity to play alongside true musicians like Kenny Garrett (a member of Miles Davis' band) and Branford Marsalis.
Over the last 7 years, he has made a mark in the subgenre of Hip Hop known as the Mixtape Culture. To these mixtape projects Neil always brings his experience - from his eclectic music tastes, to the ideas of artistic integrity - and he has gained notoriety for smoothness, creativity and originality by making products that hinge entirely on the ideals of good music and skills. This is what separates his mixtapes from the rest of the pack.
Everyone from the hipster set to the industry heavyweights have taken notice. He made Rolling Stone's "Top 10" Mixtape DJ's of 2005 list, was recognized by Vibe Magazine as one of the next DJ's "on deck" to watch out for, had his cd's featured on MTV.com's Holiday Essentials Feature, and gained honorable mentions in Mixunit.com's Power 30 List of "The most influential players in the mixtape game". In 2007, he received a SEA Mixtape Award for the .best Old School R&B. Category.
His personal style has brought him to a larger stage, as established entities in various industries of entertainment have tapped him to do his thing on the 1's and 2's - to set the mood and control the atmosphere through that universal language: music. He has proven to be prolific at doing just that, whether he is rocking a club in Miami for the upper echelon model set, getting NBA Players amped to do their hoop thing, killing the dance floor at a lounge in San Fransisco, making people move across the world at a Shanghai nightclub, or rocking a small loft party in the Lower East Side for Kangol.
In 2007, recognition for his skills culminated with the announcement of a sneaker collaboration between his crew and Adidas for their B-BALL EQUIPMENT REMIX Project, the same company that pioneered the Hip Hop Artist Collaboration years before with another DJ . Run DMC.s Jam Master Jay.
Almost 10 years later, the mixtape projects that he created are still sought after and revered. This a testament to what Neil brings to the plate, as longevity is one of the things that cannot faked or bought, and something that few in this world of disposable DJ's have. The proof is in the pudding: the best word to describe Neil Armstrong is Classic.

Always EXPRESS YO DELF!
March 16, 2008 - Top Shelf, Fully Booked, Bonifacio High Street:
A gathering of what was arguably a group Manila's most innovative and street savvy individuals, in an event that bookmarked our island city on the global "Yo, they know what's up" map; 'Express Yo Delf', a tribute event that aimed to highlight young Filipino talent, and give the city's scenesters an opportunity to show their true artistic colors, saw an incomparable hub of creativity and energy mounted with resounding success.
A brainchild and pet project of Tollo Bote and Steak Productions' Sarah Meier, Banjo Albano, and Chris Aldaba, 'Express Yo Delf' was whipped up out of "pure passion and belief in what our country's youth have to offer, in terms of music, art, film, and fashion". "About 90% of the media and guests invited had no clue what the concept was until they got there, and they were very pleased with the great concept and collaboration done by Steak Productions, Tollo Bote, the artists, musicians, and designers", cites a guest ""Everyone loved and enjoyed the Sunday vibe, complete with barbecue and flowing booze, because it was something new for Manila".
"It was an important project for everyone involved, but unsurprisingly stress-free. When you have all the right pieces to the puzzle, things have a tendency to flow without a hitch", says Sarah Meier, the CEO of Steak's Creative Agency division. "We had art in almost all its forms represented - jewelry, clothing, furniture, and toy design. Visual artists doing live pieces. Percussionists, DJ's, break dancers. On top of that, when you have support from brands that are relevant to your project, there's really no way you can go wrong. Talking to Lee, to West, to Bacardi, to Sea Air, to MTV - these are companies that understand what's happening in the scene. And it's our job and mission at Steak to marry these companies with the talents that inspire trends and change in our industry. Keeping artists from starving, and keeping our clients current - that's what we like to say", Sarah adds with a smile.
Tollo Bote, who hand-picked the event's first batch of participants, expressed contentment from doing justice to his vision; "It was very satisfying and fullfiling for my first comeback event since being inactive for awhile and see this - turntablists, percussionists, and drummers to jam unrehearsed and no direction! It's an honor to have artists like Movement 69 and OttoRetardo do live art, and clearly see that it was inspired from the live music. And of course, it's good to have designers in one event and let everyone know what's up and what's next".
Participants in the first installment of 'Express Yo Delf' boasted of the +63-2's Urban Elite; Get Happy by Happy David, Die Marie by Christina Bartges, Filthy Grommet, Mich Dulce, Fresh, Mr. Marcus of Move, Jhoon of Kjwan, Red-i, John Type, Latin Soul Brother, PG of Pasta Groove, Funk Roots Crew, Movement 69/Pilipinas Street Plan, OttoRetardo, and representing Cebu, furniture designer extraordinaire, Vito Selma.
"Vito shipped his furniture to Manila just for our event. We're thinking about making it easier for him next time, and just flying the rest of the group over to Cebu for the next EYD edition! After that, watch out for a whole new batch of talent". So until then, let's applaud the first successful 'EXPRESS YO DELF' - A PUSH FOR MANILA'S VERY OWN MUSIC, LIFESTYLE, CULTURE, FASHION, AND ART.

EXPRESS YO DELF featuring FILTHY GROMMET
"This company was started in 2006 as a hobby of customizing clothes for personal use. It surfaced from the continuous hunt for individuality and distinctiveness in fashion. As the clothes were exposed to the public, there were requests of producing pieces for friends and family. Thus, Filthy Grommet was born.
Filthy Grommet is owned by two people, Emil Perez and Gio Bote. The name centers upon the word "Grommet" which is a slang word used by skateboarders and surfboarders implying an "Excellent Rookie". We view ourselves as young individuals who shell out raw and fresh ideas influenced by our environment and our lifestyle. The experience of the hustle and bustle of the streets of manila and our world views are what emanates and translates into our pieces of clothing. We are a clothing line inspired by street culture, carrying graphic t-shirts and specializing in the customization of jeans and hoodies. Filthy Grommet steps away from the mainstream trends and creates their own wave of movement through fashion and style."

EXPRESS YO DELF featuring Get Happy
Designing accessories for a living never really crossed Happy's mind. It was more of a hobby, putting together beads and styling them the way she could never find them to be at any of the local retail stores. In the beginning, she only gave them away, mostly to friends who all went crazy over the hip styles. Inevitably, someone big like Ben Chan took notice and, without planning anything, Happy soon found herself supplying to the Human chain of stores. The funny thing about stumbling blocks is they come with perfect timing. Happy also soon developed an allergy to beads, only to discover, thank God, that the allergy was to dust rather than to beads, which allowed her to resume her "hobby" of designing accessories. Officially named "Get Happy," the hobby immediately gave her a place in the world of style.
The "Get Happy" store was originally a transparent box Happy would lug around to show and sell her pieces to friends and family. Today, you see Happy David's name splashed everywhere, her designs accessorizing models and personalities in all the fashion magazines and being sold in exclusive boutiques and department stores! Her unmistakable touch of "Happy" gives her designs the flexibility and versatility that appeals to the young, fun, and whimsical customer, as well as to the more mature, urbane sophisticates. What remains consistent is the happy feeling one gets when wearing her designs (especially apparent to our models who wore them for this shoot!).

STEAK News Network!
Big ups to everyone who partied with the STEAK Fam last week. Wednesday night at ALCHEMY kicked started the international party line up with the Orange County's exclusive SULTRA LOUNGE resident party rocker, DJ BANDOMA on the 1's & 2's. Friday night was pure madness with the OFFICIAL Ne-Yo afterparty at ASCEND. Mr. SEXY LOVE & Entourage came thru & brought the house down! I'm sure you'll see thousands of Ne-Yo pics posted all over the internet from Friday night! He was real cool by letting his fans get up close & personal for pics & greetings. The craziness continued Saturday at JAIPUR with the dancefest lasting til the wee hours of the morning. We'll be doing the rematch of the classic Go-Go girls dance battle on stage this Saturday March 8 only at JAIPUR for SHAKEDOWN SATURDAYS! Don't miss it!
Click flyers for details.
